Jos Doop-Halkes (88): ‘It gives me peace of mind that I can leave something behind for children with cancer’

18 december 2025

December is a time to pause, reflect on the future, and think about how we can make a difference for others. For Jos Doop-Halkes (88), this has taken on special meaning. As a former nurse, she understands better than anyone how deeply illness can affect a child’s life. That is why Jos decided to do something lasting: leave a legacy to the Princess Máxima Center.

Children Should Not Be Sick

Jos emphasizes that children should not have to face serious illness. During her work as a nurse in the 1960s, she saw how difficult it was for children and their families. Those experiences have always stayed with her and are an important part of her motivation to make a lasting contribution.

A Thoughtful Decision Made with Confidence

Recently, Jos visited the Princess Máxima Center to discuss her wishes. ‘I immediately felt the warmth of the team. The love and dedication of everyone working there was truly tangible. I saw how doctors, researchers, and nurses devote themselves wholeheartedly to the children. That deeply moved me.’

At her age, Jos wanted to make her decision thoughtfully. ‘It gives me peace of mind and satisfaction to know that my legacy will be in good hands at the Máxima. I have taken this step with confidence, and that feels right.’
